Snorkeling the Moalboal sardine run

Millions of sardines, just off the beach in Panagsama. Here's how to see them on your own, and how to do it responsibly.

Masks and snorkels for rent at reception

The sardine run is the reason many travellers come to Moalboal. Huge schools of sardines live just off Panagsama Beach, close enough to reach by swimming from the shore. You don’t need a boat or a dive certificate: a mask and snorkel is enough.

When to go

  • All year round. The sardines are seen throughout the year.
  • Mornings are usually calmest, which makes for easier swimming and better visibility.

How to get there

From Panagsama, the sardines are a short walk and a short swim away. Get in from the shore and swim out a little: the school is usually close to where the reef drops off. Ask at our reception for the best place to get in that day.

What to bring

  • Mask and snorkel. You can rent a mask and snorkel at our reception.
  • Fins, if you have them. They make swimming much easier.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, or a rash guard to cover up.
  • A bottle of water for afterwards. Refill it for free at the hostel.

Be kind to the reef

  • Don’t touch the sardines, the turtles, the coral or any other marine life.
  • Don’t stand on the reef.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen only.
  • Keep a respectful distance from sea turtles, which are often seen here too.

Want a hand?

If you’d rather not go alone, our team can arrange a guided trip. See Snorkeling with the sardines or message us on WhatsApp.

After your swim, rinse off the salt in our open-air showers and grab a coffee or a smoothie bowl at the coffee shop.
